who i am
I grew up in Tebourba, Tunisia in a family of professional percussionists and singers. And I just finished my first CD as solo artist. The CD, Genina features my songwriting, percussion playing and flute playing. It was recorded at The Op studio in Naples, Italy. My CD features Tunisian, North American and Neapolitan musicians but doesn't highlight my percussion as much as other recordings. I sing and play many north African and Middle Eastern percussion instruments (Bendir, darbuka, riq, etc) and winds (nay, zorca, etc). I have played in every kind of ensemble you can imagine--Turkish classical, Malouf, Jazz, funk, pop, neapolitan ethnic fusions, balkan, Afro-beat. I am a Tunisian conservatory trained in Tunisian Andalusian music and Middle Easter classical rhythms, maqams.

About the new CD:
Danceable ethno-pop Mediterranean fusions are punctuated with female and trumpet choruses. Funk and reggae grooves are accented by a popping North-American and Neapolitan horn section. An original re-elaboration of a Tunisian Sufi musical style I learned from my father, “Sufi Stomp” marries hypnotic and rustic Tunisian Sufi percussion, choral responses with fuzzy electric dub grooves. To get deep Dub space, Neil Perch produced a radical re-mix that took it to another planet! Two Malouf (Andulusian Tunisian) pieces, in contrast, feature exclusively traditional North African instruments and singing. The first is a live performance by the Tunisian orchestra Arabo Andaluso di Tebourba, directed by and featuring me on darbuka, together with my brother Belgesum (of the National Orchestra of Tunisia). The other is an in-studio collaboration between me, my other brother Rida Ben Marzouk and the Greek Lira playing of Michele Signore from the legendary Neapolitan folk ensemble Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare.
